I am using Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to focus on love, be it romantic or divine. As we have begun to see, there are numerous aspects, energies, and qualities to the spiritual life. They all pale in value compared to the value of love and compassion. If one were to focus on only one spiritual quality, cultivating the quality of love would be the most important choice. Love is truly the heart and soul of spirituality.  The heart center is the mystic center, that focalizing place of consciousness in the center of one’s being. Almost every spiritual tradition on earth places great emphasis on the heart and the quality of love. There are, of course, many different manifestations of the one love. From an early pagan perspective, love in the human heart blooms just as the earth blooms in spring. Goddesses and gods of love are intricately connected to the flowering of nature, the rising of the life force, and the merging of opposites, which ensures fertility and the continuation of life.  This process is inherently spiritual. It is the dance of spirit moving through matter and form, and moving through apparently separate beings. Once the heart opens, love can flow in many directions: toward the self, toward children and parents and friends, toward the beauty of nature, animals, and plants, toward the disadvantaged, toward the universal energy field, and, of course, toward the beloved. All these manifestations of love are part of the divine.
