MOTHER OF THE GRAIN

MOTHER OF THE GRAIN

Lammas is the cross quarter day between Summer Solstice and Fall Equinox. It is the beginning of the harvest season and the beginning of Fall in the Celtic calendar. Thanksgiving is modeled after many of the images and symbols of Lammas, including the cornucopia and corn. In ancient Celtic times Lammas (loaf mass) was known as Lughnasadh, after a solar deity whose name means light. He was the consort of the mother goddess of abundance, Abundantia. At Lammas we discover many goddesses of the fruitful earth, and get to explore our relationship to receiving nourishment. As the wheel of the year turns, the nurturing goddess gives way to the more fierce aspects of the goddess, including the lion goddess. With her we can explore our relationship to our own firey energy.
