IMBOLC is the Celtic name, and CANDLEMAS is the Christian name for the festival held on February 2. It is the cross-quarter day half way between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox and represents the quickening of life that is still in the womb of the mother goddess. In many traditions this season is a time for healing. The image to the left is of the goddess Damona. Damona is a Gualish goddess of warm springs and the protrectress of animals. For us she represents the deep body-centered awareness needed for healing. She invites us the get naked, physically and psychologically, and slip into the warm pool of the goddess. There we can feel ourselves and all of our emotions. Our deep instinctual nature can emerge, guiding us toward wholeness.
IMBOLC means “lamb’s milk”, because this time of year in Ireland the ewe’s would give birth to their lambs. The ancient Irish would honor their mother goddess Bridit on Feb. 2, and later the Celtic Christians would honor St. Brigit on this same day. If the yearly cycle were to condensed into one day, this season would represent dawn. There are many goddesses representing the dawn from cultures around the world, and the dawn itself represents new illumination and inspiration. IMBOLC is a wonderful time to focus on deep healing and inspiration for the rest of the year.
