SAULE: Warmth and Kindness
Saule is the Baltic Sun goddess who pours warmth and kindness onto the world. Her radiance activates the life-force energy in all living beings. If you draw or are drawn to this card it is time to asses your social warmth. Is learning to live with more kindness one of your core values? Some of us grew up in families that were warm and friendly, and others of us did not. Those of us who did not, often have to learn how to be a warm, friendly and kind person. This can be a challenging task if we have a lot of unprocessed hurt and anger. How do we become more sociable, while authentically honoring our hurt, and the anger defense it generates? Saule spends the night in the dark underworld. We too must go into the shadows and bring any painful parts up and into the flow of light and love.
PRACTICE OPPORTUNITY:
Take some time to tune into your ordinary social interactions. How do you relate to the grocery store clerk, the letter carrier, a stray animal? These are opportunities to practice being more warm and friendly. Do you make eye contact? How is your tone of voice? Can you be more resilient and “go with the flow” in more situations? If however, you have a people pleasing strategy, you may need to learn to say NO in a kind way. There is a big difference between KIND and NICE. Being nice implies agreeing to things that are not your truth. We need to get out of the habit of doing that! With your journal write about a past social interaction. Were you to nice, or actually kind? Write about how you would adjust your behavior in the future.
STORIES OF THE GODDESS:
Saule, the Baltic sun goddess, is the creatrix of the world, which she divided into two parts. The above world is where humankind dwells and the sun shines during the day. The underworld is the land of the dead and where the sun goes at night. Saule was depicted as a radiant goddess, pouring light from a jug. The golden liquid, which she generously gave to the earth, was the essence of the life force. In the cold northern lands everyone knew it was the sun’s power that brought forth life on the earth. Collectively, this life was honored in the form of a harmless green snake. Every household kept one, which ensured the fertility and prosperity of the family. In the myths of Saule, it was told that every midsummer she would dress in her finest, in beautiful silks trimmed in gold, silver, and copper.
