Ishtar was the great goddess of the Babylonians. She was the queen of heaven, the earth, and the underworld. She is the creative life force that keeps the world unfolding, including the potent energy of sexuality. When she is in the underworld, sexual desire ceases and the world dries up.
In this image we see Ishtar sitting upon a lily, the archetypal symbol of a female yoni. In the temples of the goddess Ishtar priestesses celebrated in sacred sexuality. If done in a sacred manner, sexuality can expand one's consciousness to the higher realms. For the Babylonians it was the goddess Ishtar who opened the portals of heaven, making profound states of unity consciousness available.
