Iris is a Greek goddess appearing as a maiden floating through the air, bedecked in rainbow colors. In the modern worldview, the changing of the seasons is a purely physical process, governed by natural laws. We do not see the magic behind it.
In this painting we see the goddess Iris "greening" the earth. Her hands transmit an energy that bring the plants to life. The land ahead of her, which she has not yet touched, is in winter, while that behind her has come into spring. This is the magic of spring's arrival.
