Changing Woman is the Navajo Mother Nature goddess. She changes her dress, color and form as she cycles through the seasons. She assists women as they grow from maidenhood, through puberty, into motherhood and their crone years.
In this painting the wheel of life spirals around through the cycle of birth from the source in the center, through all the stages of life. It eventually spirals back to source at the center. The goddess as a young woman on the right looks forward in her life to when she will be old, like the crone at the bottom. Each stage of life has its gifts and challenges.
The woman in this picture is aware of the continuity of consciousness and does not fear any stage of life or the eventual passage of the body. She observes the flow of evolution in the animals that spiral around. The true nature of all form contains inevitable change.
